Cal is from Belfast. He began his career as an actor, training at the RSAMD and at Philippe Gaulier. He was Comedy Director for the National Theatre's West End and Broadway hit show, One Man, Two Guvnors and for Don Quixote at the RSC and School Of Rock on Broadway. He has directed productions for many British repertory theatres including Dracula (Mercury Colchester), Mr Whatnot by Alan Ayckbourn (Royal Northampton), Loot, Kafka’s Dick and The Killing Of Sister George (Derby Playhouse) and is a regular guest director at The Royal Court, Liverpool. He has created countless international touring shows for companies such as Peepolykus, Kate Dimbleby, Spymonkey and The Mighty Boosh (Perrier Award) and directed Noel Fielding's international tour - An Evening With Noel Fielding. His first opera production of Haydn's Il Mondo Della Luna for English Touring Opera was nominated for a Manchester Theatre Award. Cal directed the acclaimed clown routines in Cirque du Soleil's touring show, Varekai, and for their erotic Las Vegas show, Zumanity. Since 2012 Cal has been director for Giffords Circus. His debut film, The Bubonic Play, received its premiere at the London Comedy Film Festival last January and he works recurrently as a comedy consultant on major movies here and in the USA, including Amazing Spider-Man 2, The World’s End, Man Up, The Nice Guys, The Dictator, Paddington & Paddington 2.
